Map Legend

A gift to the City by the Tacoma Land and Improvement Company, McKinley Park was named in honor of President William McKinley on his death. It was one of the original parks included in Tacoma's park system when the Metropolitan Park District was formed in 1907. A major regional park in its early years, it was separated from what was the Hawthorne District of Tacoma in 1961 by Interstate 5. That area is now home to the Tacoma Dome, Pierce Transit Center, Freighthouse Square and future home of the LeMay Car Museum. McKinley Park is currently the focus of many volunteer groups who value the site for its potential for better recreational opportunities and as an integral part of Dome District.
