The Manitou Community and Art Center is the former location of Manitou School which was closed in 1994. Metro Parks acquired the property from the Tacoma School District and operated a community center using the school site and building from 1995 to 2005. Now MPT intends to replace the facility with a new South Tacoma Community Center at S 66th and S Adams Street, several blocks to the northeast. Parts of the existing school buildings are currently occupied by a lease tenant, and are used as temporary storage by Metro Parks. As of June 2009, MPT is developing a strategy for surplus and sale of this property.
