People's Center was built as a result of strong community organization and effort. Known as the Malcolm X Center before the name was changed in 1978 to People's Center, it has served as a cornerstone of the community for meeting and social functions. With a primary focus on youth and after school programming, this central Tacoma "Hilltop" location is popular with adults and the many children and youth in the area. A recently completed renovation enhanced the facility, which includes a fitness center, indoor swimming pool and basketball/gym facility.
